According to the statement made by scientists from England, all cancerous cells of a cancer patient were destroyed, while the cancerous tumors of others shrank. The virus is an attenuated form of herpes virus; it was played on this form in a way that it would kill tumors.
LONG-TERM AND WIDE-SCALE STUDIES ARE NEEDED
Longer and larger studies are needed to see if the treatment really works. But the BBC’s health editor, Michelle Roberts, says that even at this stage, experts can hope that if the viruses were injected into cancer patients, even patients with advanced cancer could be cured.
“TWO YEARS HAVE PAST AND NO MORE CANCER CELLS IN MY BODY”
The research is being led by the Cancer Research Institute at the Royal Marsden Foundation of England’s National Health Service (NHS).
Krzysztof Wojkowski, 39, who lives in west London, is one of the patients participating in the ongoing phase of the study.
Wojkowski, who was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary glands in the mouth area in 2017, could not defeat the cancer despite undergoing many surgeries and treatments. On the contrary, the disease progressed further.
“I was told that I had no other choice, now I was in intensive care. It was a devastating situation, so it was incredible to be given the chance to participate in this study.”
In a short phase of the virus treatment, it was seen that all the cancerous cells in his body were cleared:
“I got an injection every two weeks, it took a total of five weeks. It has been two years now and there are no cancerous cells in my body anymore.”
NEEDLE DIRECTLY TO CANCER CELL
Injections made directly into the tumor attack the cancerous cells in two ways: It surrounds and detonates the cancerous cells; Then it activates the immune system.
In studies involving about 40 patients, some patients were directly injected with this modified herpes virus called RP2, a cold virus that normally causes herpes. Other patients continued to be given the cancer drugs they had taken with these injections.
According to the results obtained;
-Three out of nine patients who were given RP2 alone – Wojkowski was one of them – were found to have shrunken tumors
– Treatment gave positive results in seven of 30 patients who continued to take cancer medication
-Side effects such as fatigue felt very mildly
“A VERY RARE SITUATION”
The head of the research team, Prof. Kevin Harrington told the BBC that the results of his treatment were “really impressive”, noting that he has also treated some advanced cancers:
“It’s rare to see such positive results at this early stage of clinical research, in this first step towards testing the safety of the treatment. We have also obtained positive results in patients whose treatment has been terminated. I look forward to seeing if we will continue to get positive results as the number of patients participating in the study increases.”
This isn’t actually the first time scientists have used viruses to fight cancer. A few years ago, the NHS had approved a cold virus-based treatment for advanced skin cancer, called T-Vec.
prof. Harrington says the RP2 is an enhanced version of T-Vec:
From Cancer Research UK, Dr. Marianne Baker also says that even the current results could make big changes in cancer treatment:
“Scientists discovered nearly 100 years ago that viruses could work in the treatment of cancer. But implementing it safely and effectively has proven very difficult. This new virus therapy shows promise in its infancy, now we need more studies to be done and see how the treatment works. “Studies show that combining multiple treatments is a powerful strategy, and virus therapy may play an important role in that strategy.”
