An investigation has been launched against Begona Gomez, the wife of Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. A confidentiality order was issued for the file regarding Gomez, who was accused of influence peddling and corruption in his private relationships.
A Spanish court acted on a complaint from an anti-corruption group called Manos Limpias (Clean Hands).
The court did not provide detailed information about the file because it was at the preliminary preparation stage. Manos Limpias claimed that Begona Gomez used her influence as the prime minister’s wife and found a sponsor for a graduate course.
Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, who came to power in 2018 when the previous conservative government lost the vote of confidence following the corruption scandal, said, “Despite everything, I still trust justice in my country.”
Deputy Prime Minister Maria Jesus Montero told reporters, “This is a false accusation made by a far-right organization to denigrate and tarnish the office of prime minister of the government,” while the main opposition People’s Party asked Sanchez to acquit himself.
