Grocery delivery app Getir laid off 1,800 employees in Germany earlier this week. It is expected to completely withdraw from the country as of May 15.
According to Ekonomim.com, the company will focus on the Turkish domestic market. It will also cease operations in the European market in May. The company refuses to comment on the matter.
According to the German Wirtschaftswoche claim, Getir’s warehouses, which laid off 1800 employees, will be closed gradually in three weeks. The closure also means the closure of Gorillas, which the company recently acquired.
It is claimed that Getir received investments from existing investors on the condition that it leaves the European market. Further expansion of food distribution in the Turkish market is among the expectations of investors. Getir’s major shareholder is dissatisfied with Mubadala’s lack of a viable business model. It was also claimed that Getir had run out of patience with the management because it did not unite Gorillas in Germany under a single brand.
According to Reuters, Getir is also considering selling its e-commerce site N11.
