At the verdict hearing of the Gezi resistance case, held two years ago, a sentence of 18 years was given to Mücella Yapıcı, Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman, Çiğdem Mater, Ali Hakan Altınay and Mine Özerden, and aggravated life imprisonment was given to businessman Osman Kavala. Following the Supreme Court’s reversal decision, Yapıcı and Altınay were released. TMMOB Istanbul Provincial Coordination made a press statement regarding the Gezi Trial detainees being unlawfully imprisoned for two years. The statement made at TMMOB Chamber of Architects Istanbul Metropolitan Branch was read by TMMOB Istanbul Provincial Coordination Board Secretary Seyfettin Avcı. While CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik, political party representatives, families of Gezi Trial detainees and citizens attended the press release, Mücella Yapıcı and Hakan Altınay, who were released last year, also took part in the statement. The Workers’ Party of Türkiye (TİP) also participated in the statement with the slogan “Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere is resistance”.

Hunter, “Exactly two years have passed since the unlawful decision given by the government-controlled court regarding the Gezi Resistance, one of the most magnificent popular movements of our country. During these two years, we witnessed a major legal scandal. Although TMMOB Board Member Mücella Yapıcı and Hakan Atalay were released in this process, our friends, including Tayfun Kahraman, the former president of the Istanbul Branch of our Chamber of City Planners, and Can Atalay, Legal Counsel of our Chamber of Architects, have been kept in prison for 2 years, and Osman Kavala for 6 and a half years.” said.

“INTERESTED IN PUNISHMENT”

“This decision is not just for our friends” said Avcı, “This decision is aimed at the millions who shook and frightened the government in May-June 2013; It aims to punish the democratic rights of millions of people, to suppress peaceful and democratic demands, and to take revenge and punish in a way that does not suit public administrations. The one-man regime, which is falling apart everywhere, uses the law not as a tool to ensure justice and eliminate injustice, but as a tool to punish social opposition. “This case, which sees the people’s free expression of their demands and taking to the streets for this purpose as a coup attempt, is an indication of the anti-democratic mentality of those who govern this country.” said.

“GEZİ IS THIS COUNTRY ITSELF”

“Stop this lawlessness” Avcı concluded his words as follows:

“Gezi is the cry of millions against a handful of capitalists and a handful of tyrants. Our parks, trees, forests, streams… Gezi is this country itself. From here we continue to stubbornly say once again: You cannot stop the rightful struggle of the people. You cannot stand against Gezi. In the 2nd year of lawlessness, we want our friends detained in the Gezi case to be released. Release our friends.”

FAMILIES TOOK THE WORD

Families of Gezi detainees also spoke in the press release. Mine Özerden’s mother, Halide Özerden, “What are the Gezi prisoners paying for? We are tired now. Let the Gezi prisoners be free” said. Tayfun Kahraman’s wife, Meriç Demir Kahraman, “Our friends are innocent. For two years, Tayfun has been deprived of our family and us, without providing two lines of legal justification, without providing two pieces of evidence. We are deprived of him. Vera has to grow up without a father, she has to grow up in Silivri prisons behind double glazing, talking to her father on the phone for an hour a week. From here to the Constitutional Court” “I would like to call out clearly to the president, members and all employees of the Turkish Armed Forces Association: I request them to end this detention for two years without a single legal justification, this conviction without a single piece of evidence, and this oppression by giving us our right to a fair trial.” said.

MESSAGE FROM KAHRAMAN

Meriç Kahraman then read his wife’s letter. In the hero letter, “It has been exactly two years since I was unlawfully arrested. I think almost everyone knows that this captivity, which stole two years from our lives, started with the political developments in our country and the hardening of the climate, and that there is no legal side to the issue. Our evidence was not examined, our witnesses were not listened to, and the punishment was completely ignored without any criminal elements or evidence needed to impose a sentence.” “At the end of a strange court process based on assumptions, I was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Moreover, this case, in which we were tried for purely political reasons, was placed in the middle of a judicial crisis. Sooner or later, democracy and law will prevail.” He said:

“NO ONE IS FREE”

Mücella Yapıcı also said, “Even though me and my friend are here today, it is suffocating us. I do not feel free. I am sure none of you do. Don’t feel, friends. You are not free. In such a system of rights, law and justice, neither we nor our children nor anyone is free. Everyone who is held captive by this unjust government I want freedom for he said. Hakan Altınay, on the other hand, “I think Meriç said something important. She talked about the truth. I think the demand for truth is a more important demand than the demand for justice or law.” said.

MESSAGE FROM ATALAY

Can Atalay’s message was also read in the press release. Regarding the decision in the Atalay Çorlu Train massacre case, “Just as we did not let go of those responsible for the Çorlu Train Massacre, and argued that it was not enough for officials, civil servants and administrators to be punished, and that those with political will should also go through a fair trial, in the same way, knowing that the earthquake was not just a geological event, those who facilitated the construction of all those rotten buildings were “I would like to announce to the whole of Turkey, as the elected Hatay Deputy, that I will continue my work to hold accountable the understanding of politics and all those responsible for it, regardless of the central government and local government.” said.
