– History of the case

The indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the terrorist attack was accepted by the Ankara 4th High Criminal Court on July 13, 2016, and the first hearing was held on November 7, 2016.

As a result of the trial, the court decided the case on August 3, 2018 and sentenced 9 defendants to aggravated life imprisonment for a total of 101 times, one for “violating the constitutional order” and 100 times for “intentional murder of 100 people”, and the 16 fugitive defendants of the case. He also ruled that the file against him be separated.

A criminal complaint was filed for the defendant Ekici, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for “being the leader of an armed terrorist organization”, for the crimes of “violating the constitutional order”, “intentionally killing 100 people” and “attempting to kill” the complainants injured in the terrorist attack.

The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals partially overturned the file in terms of some defendants. The chamber, which also overturned the conviction against Ekici on the charge of “establishing and leading an armed terrorist organization”, stated that Ekici should be tried for “intentional murder” and “crime against humanity”.

During the trial, Ankara 4th High Criminal Court combined the case against Ekici, the case against 16 fugitive defendants related to the attack, and the cases filed against 9 people, and the number of defendants in the trial became 26.

As a result of the death of one person due to the injuries he received in the attack, the number of victims increased to 101.
