Desert dust is coming to Turkey! Will the sky turn red?

The desert dust in Athens is now heading towards Turkey. It will be effective in the western and central parts of the country for 3 days. Can cities in Turkey be like Athens? Which cities will be affected by dust? CNN TÜRK Meteorology Advisor Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen explained.

CNN TÜRK Meteorology Advisor Orhan Şen made the following statements;

THE DUST IN ATHENS IS COMING TOWARDS TURKEY

It comes from North Africa. Because of the Sahara Desert. Sometimes it goes from the Sahara Desert to Europe and comes to us from there. Sometimes it comes to us via the Mediterranean and sometimes via Greece. It will affect the Aegean, Marmara, Western Black Sea and then the Central Anatolia region. This dust usually comes in these months. The reason why the color appears yellow or red is because it contains an iron component and when it comes to air, it appears red.

The situation in Athens is different. Meteorological conditions have pressed the desert dust downwards. The dust above went down and increased the concentration. There is strong wind in Istanbul, the Aegean and the Western Mediterranean. Strong wind disperses this dust. So it does not increase concentration. Dust will be seen in Istanbul today and tomorrow.

In Istanbul it is not like in Athens. There is no high pressure. Since the wind is strong in Istanbul and the Aegean, the concentration cannot seem to have increased that much. There is, but it will not reach an unhealthy level.

WHICH OTHER PROVINCES WILL BE AFFECTED?

It will be effective in Central Anatolia tomorrow; Kastamonu, Konya, Ankara… We will see the high pressure effect especially in Ankara tomorrow. This dust will move from Istanbul to the East after tomorrow. It will be more effective around Kastamonu, Western Black Sea, Ankara and Konya. We will be able to see the redness in a slightly darker color around Central Anatolia.

It doesn’t cause any harm as long as you don’t inhale it. It contains many useful minerals, but we still need to breathe it.
