After working as the ‘Asia Director’ at the World Bank in the USA for a while, Korhan Berzeg retired and started living in his house in Büyükada, Istanbul. He was never heard from again after he went for a walk with his trained Doberman dog ‘Tina’ on June 17th.
While the search efforts initiated in the region by AFAD, Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK), Ankara Gendarmerie Special Public Order Command (JÖAK) and volunteer search and rescue teams, as well as tracking and cadaver dogs, yielded no results, Berzeg’s dog Tina was found 29 days after she disappeared, 74 days later. On the morning of August, he returned to his home in Armutlu District. ‘Tina’ was also included in the searches. ‘Tina’, who was put on a GPS and starved to get to the place where she was detained for 74 days, returned home each time.
The dog, which did not contribute to the work, was handed over to Angela Berzeg after a while. While Tina and Angela Berzeg were returning to their home in Büyükada, Istanbul, the search efforts continued by increasing the number of teams and ended on October 24, 130 days after Korhan Berzeg disappeared.
ID AND CREDIT CARD WERE FOUND
312 days after Berzeg’s disappearance, at around 13.30 yesterday, while Gelgeç Neighborhood Headman Ahmet Gülay was inspecting the water coming to the neighborhood, Berzeg’s identity card and credit card were found by the stream in the forest, 4 kilometers away from Korhan Berzeg’s house in Armutlu District. found clothing and bone fragments considered to be human. Following Gülay’s notification, many gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region. Following the work carried out by the Public Prosecutor and gendarmerie teams at the scene, bone fragments, clothing and belongings were taken for examination.
‘THERE WAS NO SKULL’
Speaking to the DHA reporter on the phone, Gelgeç Neighborhood Headman Ahmet Gülay said, “There was a problem with the water in our neighborhood. We thought there was a burst in the pipes.
While we were looking for the route where the pipes passed, we saw the clothes. A card with Korhan Berzeg’s photo used in public transportation was found in his pocket. His photo was intact. His credit card was in his wallet. There were bones 1 meter away from his clothes. There was no skull. “We immediately informed the gendarmerie,” he said.
THE BOTTOM PART OF THE TROUSERS IS TOOTHERED
It was learned that the upper part of Berzeg’s trousers, which were found by the stream at the top of the road where he was walking with his dog, was intact, but the leg parts were torn apart. While the fact that the bottom part of the trousers were ripped and torn strengthens the animal attack, the possibility that the body was torn apart by animals and brought to the riverside is considered.
The fact that Korhan Berzeg’s belongings were found on the path at the top of the area, which had been searched many times before, strengthened the possibility that Berzeg, who had Alzheimer’s disease, had lost his way, while the authorities stated that it was not possible for Berzeg to go down to the path where the bones and clothes were found.
‘TINA’S RETURN HOME BRINGS DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES TO THE AGENDA
The fact that Korhan Berzeg’s dog ‘Tina’, who returned home after 74 days, was well-groomed, had no traces of dirt, soil or mud on her, and that her paws were clean, brings up different possibilities. It was found that ‘Tina’, who was first thought to have been left or escaped while being detained in the nearby area, did not remain in nature in the fecal and blood samples examined.
Authorities noted that if the bone fragments found by the stream belong to Korhan Berzeg, other possibilities other than disappearance will come to the fore and the investigation will be carried out in this direction.
A SEARCH EFFORT WITH A CADAVER DOG WAS STARTED IN A 2.5 KILOMETER AREA
A new search operation was launched this morning in an area of 2.5 kilometers from Korhan Berzeg’s house in Armutlu District. In the search operation, in which 4 gendarmes, 1 commando and 1 dog search team participated, the trail was followed with a cadaver dog. It was also learned that the cadaver dog was actively followed for 20 minutes and rested for 40 minutes in order to smell and track better.
HIS DAUGHTER IN ENGLAND IS COMING TO TURKEY
In addition, the bone fragment found will be sent to Bursa Forensic Medicine Institute for DNA analysis. It was learned that Korhan Berzeg’s daughter, Nisa Berzeg, will come to Turkey from England to give a DNA sample.
As a result of the comparison, it will be determined whether the bone fragment belongs to Korhan Berzeg, who has been missing for 313 days.
