The baby boy, whose mother died in a traffic accident in Adana and was taken from his mother’s womb by cesarean section, survived the life-threatening situation by being allowed to breathe without a respirator. The baby, whom doctors described as ‘impossible to survive’, will be discharged after a few weeks.

The accident occurred on the night of April 17 on Karataş Street, Seyhan District, Yüreğir district. Nur Abbud, a 9-month pregnant Syrian national, fell off the electric bike used by her husband Raid Abbud (40) during the journey. Meanwhile, the private public bus with license plate 01 J 0142, driven by Ali D., hit the pregnant woman. While Abbud was taken to the City Training and Research Hospital by ambulance, Ali D. was taken into custody. Nur Abbud, whose fourth child, a boy, was taken by cesarean section, could not be saved. Ali D., who was referred to the courthouse after his procedures, was arrested. The body of Abbud, who was taken to the Syrian city of Azaz by his wife, was buried.

He wasn’t breathing when he was born

The baby boy, who could not breathe due to lack of oxygen during birth and to whom doctors performed heart massage for 15 minutes to keep him alive, was transferred to Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine Balcalı Hospital 5 days ago. The baby, whom doctors described as ‘impossible to survive’, was freed from the respirators and started breathing after the interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Professor of the Department of Child Health and Diseases, who gave information to journalists about the baby’s health status. Dr. Hacer Yapıcıoğlu stated that cases of birth without oxygen occur frequently, but this is the first time she has encountered such an accident-related trauma. Prof. Dr. Yapıcıoğlu explained that while he was at the City Hospital, after the baby’s heart sound was noticed, he was not breathing after being surgically removed, and his heart rate could not be recorded. The baby received a heart massage for 15 minutes, and medicine was given to his lungs through a tube to start his breathing. Yapıcıoğlu said, “Since our baby was born without oxygen, we reduced his body temperature to 34.5 degrees by body cooling, which we call hypothermia. Thus, the oxygen consumption of the brain cells decreased. It was worse when he first arrived, but after 72 hours of treatment, we have now removed the respirator. Despite his bad history, he is getting better than expected. “We are currently feeding him with a tube, but his sucking reflex is also developed. We have a few more tests to do. If his oral feeding returns to normal and there is no seizure, we plan to discharge him within 1-2 weeks,” he said.

On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Yapıcıoğlu said that pregnant women and children should not travel by motorcycle. – ADANA
