Sinusitis can affect people of all ages, including children; It is known to cause symptoms such as nasal congestion and runny, cough and feeling of pressure on the face.

Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Opr. Dr. Cemal Ayhan said that allergies, excessive use of nasal sprays, smoking, swimming, diving and nasal polyps are risk factors for sinusitis.

Sinusitis can occur due to changes in temperature or air pressure, or any factor that causes sinusitis or prevents mucus clearance.

Risk factors for sinusitis may include allergies, overuse of nasal sprays, smoking, swimming, diving, and nasal polyps.

Sinusitis in case of virus, bacteria or fungus development in the sinus; It turns into a sinus infection. These types of infections may develop following a cold, when the virus attacks the sinus lining, causing swelling and narrowing.

The body’s response to produce more mucus, combined with restricted drainage, creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth, resulting in a sinus infection.

WHAT IS SINUSITIS?

Sinusitis is inflammation of the tissue lining the small spaces in the bones around the nose. This condition manifests itself with typical symptoms such as facial fullness, nasal congestion and runny nose.

It’s usually caused by the common cold, but other viruses, bacteria, fungi, and allergies can also cause sinusitis.

Sinusitis, which affects both children and adults, can be relieved with natural home treatments, painkillers and salt water. These treatments are valid for acute sinusitis. However, if the person has chronic sinusitis, antibiotic treatment may be required.

SINUSITIS SYMPTOMS MAY BE:

– Dark yellow-green nasal discharge

– Nasal congestion

– Fullness in the facial area such as around the cheeks, eyes and forehead

– Loss of smell

– Postnasal drip

– Fire

– Headache

– Sore throat

– Bad breath

– Feeling tired

– Pressure and pain in the ear

– Upper jaw and toothache

– Cough

SINUSITIS TREATMENT METHODS

If sinusitis treatment is not done correctly, it can cause serious diseases such as pharyngitis, chronic gastritis, reflux, eye area infections and abscesses, meningitis, and brain abscess. Sinusitis is diagnosed by ear, nose and throat examination, endoscopic examination, direct radiography and sinus tomography.

Sinusitis classification is as follows:

– Acute sinusitis: Lasts approximately 4 weeks. It may resolve spontaneously or with medication.

– Subacute sinusitis: It is a transition phase in which acute sinusitis does not heal.

– Chronic sinusitis: It is a condition that lasts longer than about 3 months. First of all, antibiotic treatment is applied.

If sinusitis has become chronic and cannot be treated with medication, sinusitis surgery may be on the agenda.
Endoscopic sinus surgery can be applied to chronic sinusitis patients or balloon sinusoplasty surgery in suitable patients. In endoscopic sinus surgery, polyps or other anatomical disorders that block the natural channels of the sinuses are corrected and the channels of the sinuses are opened. Balloon sinuplasty is a more up-to-date method and is applied only to the sinuses in the face, forehead and nasal area. The patient’s suitability for this method must be determined by the doctor. With this treatment, the patient is discharged on the same day, can return to work the next day, and his natural anatomical structure is not disrupted.

Balloon sinusoplasty provides rapid recovery without damaging any tissue in the nose, causing bleeding and without the need for tampons. This method is applied in sinus treatment in a similar way to the method used to open the blocked vessels of the heart. In the method, after finding the closed hole of the sinuses, the deflated balloon is placed in this hole and after observing that the balloon is in the right place under the x-ray, the balloon is inflated with a certain pressure.
