WORKERS WERE ALSO INCLUDED

In New York, USA, some worker groups and civil activists in the city also participated in the protests at the City College of New York (City College), a university that has recently joined the demonstrations in support of Palestine, on the second day.

For the first time, workers and some activists who call themselves “New York Workers” took part in the pro-Palestinian protests that have been going on for two days on the City College campus in Manhattan.

The Gaza Solidarity Camp, established by City College students on the school campus, was a first in terms of a protest by students at a university taking to the streets and uniting with the public.

After Israel’s attacks on Gaza have completed their 6th month and have not been ended, the protests have gained momentum again, starting from universities in the USA, and before the upcoming presidential elections, with the involvement of some NGOs and labor unions, large-scale protests such as “Black Lives Matter” have been carried out. It strengthens the possibility of turning into a street movement.

“WE ARE STRONGER THAN EVER”

A representative speaking at the Gaza Solidarity Camp at City College on behalf of the protest group at Columbia University, which was the starting center of the protests on campus, said that they are stronger than ever on university campuses and that they will continue to fight until their demands are met.

In addition, statements were shared in a WhatsApp group where the demonstrators communicated, stating that the City College administration “agreed to sit at the table to negotiate” with the student representative group of the Palestinian demonstrators, and that this “means a great victory” for them.

On the other hand, while the tension between the Columbia University administration and students in New York regarding the Gaza protest that started last week continued, Democratic Member of the House of Representatives from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, came to the solidarity camp on the university’s campus and promised support.

Minnesota House of Representatives Member Ilhan Omar also visited the Gaza Solidarity Camp in Columbia yesterday and posed next to Palestinian supporters.

The support of many lecturers, professors and some politicians for the pro-Palestinian protests that have spread to universities all over the USA makes it difficult for university administrations to end these demonstrations.

MANY PEOPLE WERE TAKEN INTO DETENTION

A reaction to Israel also came from the USA, and Columbia University students in New York started pro-Palestinian protests about a week ago. The movement, which found wide support, quickly spread to New York University, Columbia University, Emerson College, University of Southern California, Yale University, University of Texas, Indiana University, University of Minnesota, Ohio State University and California State Polytechnic Universities.

While the police intervened harshly in the demonstrations, it was revealed to the public that at least 570 people, including faculty members and students, were detained.
