Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who took steps towards the recognition of the Palestinian state, was targeted in his country.

Prime Minister Sanchez signaled that he will leave office following the “corruption” investigation launched against his wife, Begona Gomez.

Sanchez, who canceled his programs for the rest of the week, said he was considering resigning.

Resignation plan: He will announce his decision

Pedro Sanchez, who has managed Spain since 2018, stated that the “seriousness of the attacks” he and his wife Begona Gomez experienced led him to re-evaluate his position.

The Spanish leader said he would announce his decision on Monday.

Investigation into her husband’s business affairs

Sanchez’s statement came hours after a Madrid court opened a preliminary investigation into Begona Gomez’s business affairs following a complaint by far-right Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), whose leader has links to Amnesty International.

Prime Minister Sanchez: Begona will defend her honor

In his letter, Sanchez said that Manos Limpias’s complaint was based on “alleged news” by news sites in which he described his political leanings as “clearly right-wing and far-right”, and used the following statements:

Begona will defend her honor. He will cooperate with the justice system as much as necessary to uncover seemingly scandalous but non-existent facts.

“They are carrying out a bullying operation”

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez accused his political rivals, especially Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the conservative People’s Party (PP) and Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right Vox party, of “collaborating with Manos Limpias.”

According to The Guardian, Sanchez said that the group in question launched a “bullying operation” in order to “attack his wife and cause her personal and political collapse.”

“We are ready to recognize the state of Palestine”

Pedro Sanchez, who said that Spain was ready to recognize the Palestinian state, stated that the international community should also take steps in this direction, otherwise they would not be able to help Palestine.

Sánchez, “Spain is ready to recognize the Palestinian state.” he said.

Sanchez’s two-state solution initiative

Prime Minister Sanchez visited Poland, Norway, Ireland on 11 and 12 April and Slovenia on 16 April. He was seeking support for organizing an international peace conference in line with the recognition of the Palestinian state and the goal of a two-state solution.
