Henry, who wrote a letter to the members of the Council of Ministers from Los Angeles, USA, and shared it on his social media account, officially stated that he had resigned from his post. In his letter, Henry said, “Taking into account the current situation, I submit the resignation of my government. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the cabinet members, the public administration, the security forces, everyone who contributed and all the patriots who accompanied me on this journey.” he said. Following Henry’s resignation, Finance Minister Patrick Boisvert was appointed acting prime minister. Haiti is currently governed by a 9-person transitional council consisting of political and civil society representatives.
WHAT HAPPENED IN HAITI?
Armed gangs demanding the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Henry clashed with security forces by carrying out armed attacks on two prisons near Port-au Prince and the Croix des Bouquets region on March 2 and 3. During the clashes, approximately 4 thousand prisoners escaped from prison and 12 people lost their lives. The government declared a state of emergency to catch criminals.
Armed gangs, who blocked the roads in various parts of the capital, tried to stop the operations of the international airport and disrupted the regular functioning of the country’s largest port, where containers filled with basic needs products arrived.
The United Nations (UN) reported on April 22 that 2,500 people were killed or injured in Haiti due to gang violence in the first 3 months of 2024.
