The draft resolution on the peaceful use of outer space, submitted by the USA and Japan and co-presented by Turkey, was voted in the 15-member United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

According to AA news, the bill vetoed by Russia, 13 ‘Yes’ with 1 ‘abstains’ got votes. China abstained from voting.

Russia and China’s amendment proposal for the bill before the vote was not accepted because it did not receive enough votes.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, argued that the draft resolution text had political content and did not reflect the views of all members.

Stating that no weapons should be placed in space, Nebenzia stated that this is why they requested changes.

US Permanent Representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, reminded that Russia has clearly stated that it has no intention of placing nuclear weapons in space, “Then why did you use veto power today?” said.
