An elderly tourist was mauled by a wild bear after rolling down his car window to take a selfie in Romania.
The incident occurred on April 22. A 72-year-old Scottish woman and her companion encountered two bears while passing through the Transfăgărășan mountain road, which is famous for Romania’s nature.
Tourists stopped their vehicles to get a closer look at the impressive animals. At this moment, one of the bears suddenly approached the vehicle.

Thinking that this was an unmissable opportunity to take photos, the Scottish woman made a bold move and lowered the window of the vehicle and prepared her phone to take a selfie. However, the predators were not as enthusiastic about taking photos as the old woman.
The bear right next to the vehicle attacked the woman seconds after the window was opened and shattered her right arm. While the duo was terrified, the companion behind the wheel quickly stepped on the gas and prevented the bear from mauling his friend further.
“I JUST WANTED TO TAKE A PHOTO”
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital after the brutal attack in the Carpathian Mountains. The woman, who told local media that she came from Scotland, said, ““We were in the car and were going to take photos. When the bears came to the window, I wanted to take a photo of them.” said.
While doctors announced that the 72-year-old tourist’s injuries were not life-threatening, authorities announced that a team was sent to the region after the attack and the bears were removed from the road.
Police advised residents and tourists to always keep a safe distance from animals they encounter in the wild.

Brown bears are quite common in the regions surrounding the Carpathian mountains, which stretch from Romania to Poland and pass through Slovakia. There have been a number of bear attacks in Eastern Europe in recent years, including a deadly attack in Slovakia in 2021.
