The decision was announced in the case regarding the bomb attack on Istanbul Taksim Istiklal Street on November 13, 2022. The court sentenced Ahlam Albashir, who left the bomb, to a total of 7 aggravated life imprisonment and 1,794 years in prison for 4 crimes.
WHAT HAPPENED?
A bomb was detonated on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu at 16.14 on November 13, 2022. Six people died and 99 people were injured in the explosion. Many workplaces around the street were also damaged due to the explosion.
In the investigation initiated after the explosion, the Police announced that they determined that the bomb that caused the explosion was left by a woman on the bank on the street, and that after the explosion, she took a taxi and walked away from Taksim.
Syrian Ahlam Albashir, born in 1999, who left the bomb on the street, caught it shortly after the attack, at 02.55, in a house in the Kanarya District of Küçükçekmece district. A total of 51 people, including Albashir, were detained in connection with the attack.
Istanbul Police Department shared an announcement that Albashir “confessed his PKK/PYD connection”. The police also stated that the suspect “was trained as a special intelligence officer by the PKK/PYD/YPG terrorist organization” and that he “entered Turkey illegally through Afrin-Idlib to carry out an action.” In the news that came to the fore later, it was stated that Albashir explained in his statement at the prosecutor’s office that “his brother was a high-level commander in the Free Syrian Army (FSA).”
17 suspects, including Albashir, were arrested on 18 November 2022 and taken to Marmara (Silivri) Prison. 29 suspects were deported.
