Recalling the decision of the Constitutional Court (AYM) on the issue, the unions stated that a crime was committed by not implementing this decision and called for the resignation of the governor and the minister of interior, who admitted that they could not ensure the security of the tiny square in the heart of the city.
The Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) reminded the Constitutional Court’s decision that “This is a violation of rights” for Taksim Square, which has been closed to workers since 2013, and announced that they will hold the celebration in Taksim this year and stated that they will not ask for permission for this.
However, the decision signaled by the Minister of Labor Vedat Işıkhan the day before was announced yesterday by Istanbul Governor Davut Gül. Citing the security issue, Gül said, “Taksim is closed to all such events. We talked to all of them, especially DİSK, KESK and similar organizations. “We explained to all of them that it will not be in Taksim,” he said.
Evaluating the governor’s statements, Confederation of Public Employees Unions (KESK) Co-Chairman Ahmet Karagöz said: “If they cannot ensure the security of a small square in the heart of the city, they should resign. Both the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights ruled that this ban was a violation of rights. The decision of the highest court in the country is not heard. We are waiting for all friends of labor and the oppressed to come to Taksim that day.”
DİSK President Arzu Çerkezoğlu, regarding the words of the little girl who sat in the governor’s chair, said, “We would like you to express these beautiful demands and wishes in Taksim on May 1. “We welcome you and your friends and your families to Taksim,” she said.
