The search operations started the previous day for the Agusta Koala ‘AW119’ type helicopter that disappeared from the radar, and continued throughout the day yesterday. The Italian National Fire Service and the National Alpine Rescue Teams, as well as the Italian Air Force, participated in the search and rescue efforts of the helicopter with 7 people.

Officials stated that the helicopter, which took off from Capannori Lucca Tassignano Airport at around 10:00 local time, was last found in Modena, near the city of Pievepelago. The search was therefore said to be focused on the Apennine ridge between the small town of San Pellegrino in the region and Piandelagotti. Because the area is relatively uninhabited and rugged, the team of 24 volunteers from the National Alpine Rescue conducted the research from the ground up.

The Italian press wrote that the search for the helicopter resumed early yesterday morning in the border area of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions in the north of the country. However, it was pointed out that this region is mountainous, forested, difficult to reach and even ‘inaccessible’. Experts stated that getting lost in this region is ‘just like getting lost in the desert’. The area was detected by the last cell phone signals of pilot Corrado Levorin. Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and rescue teams took part in the search and rescue efforts.

Pievepelago, the mountainous city of Modena, was designated as the center of the land search. Mountain rescue teams, using trained dogs, made investigations in forested and mountainous areas from here. Military helicopters of the Italian Air Force also provided support to the ground crews from the air.

DANGER SIGNAL NOT SENTclass=”medianet-inline-adv”>

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Serra, there was a storm in the Apennine Mountains region when the helicopter disappeared from the radar. Meanwhile, no distress signal was sent from the helicopter to the center. The helicopter was taking its passengers to the new facility of the Emilian company.

Since the vehicle, which can carry a maximum of 8 people, has a single engine, it has lower operating costs but is considered safer.
