WALL – A person set himself on fire in Galata Tower Square in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district. The seriously injured person was taken to the hospital.
According to the news of DHA, a person in costume, who came to Galata Tower Square at around 18:30 and had a staff in his hand, wandered around the tower for a while. He took pictures with those who wanted to take a picture with him.
Later, the person who spilled the flammable substance on him set himself on fire. Employees of a hotel intervened with a fire extinguisher. Health and police teams were dispatched to the scene.
The person, who was seriously injured and whose name was learned to be Abdullah Cihat Turan Pekpak, was taken to Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital by ambulance.
Fikret Görgüç, an employee of a cafe, said, “Suddenly, he set himself on fire. He didn’t say anything. He burned it directly. Then the hotel staff extinguished it. His condition was severe, it was very bad. Everyone was trying to shoot a video.”
A chestnut maker said, “I couldn’t see it properly. He burned himself. I don’t know if he was walking around here, I didn’t realize it. It suddenly caught fire.”
In the statement made by the Governorship of Istanbul regarding the incident, the following statements were made:
“Today, around 18.30 in our Beyoğlu district, near the Galata Tower, the person named ACTP, registered with the population of Konya province Meram district, attempted to set himself on fire with the flammable substance he poured on him. With the intervention of the citizens in the vicinity, the flames on the person were extinguished and the person was transferred to the hospital by our 112 Emergency Health teams.
