Every time I watched the movie, this question always came to my mind: “Why did they give so much space to the wedding scene of Don Vito’s daughter at the beginning of the movie?” Then the pieces fell into place. The scenes from the beginning to the end of the wedding scene were like spoilers for the entire movie and were an explanation of what kind of personality each character actually had, both directly and through symbolism. This is so much so that I saw that there were meanings in every frame of the canvas, from the smallest side characters to the main characters, like a complete work of art. If you wish, let’s proceed step by step. I will do all the character analysis, but I left Vito’s analysis to the end because his signs are quite many.

Warning: Naturally contains spoilers.

In the introductory sequence, the undertaker’s request from Vito and Vito’s acceptance of this request, and then, just before saying “I will ask something from you one day”, the undertaker and Sonny enter the same frame, and in the future, Sonny’s body, which is full of holes, is repaired by the undertaker. undertaker check

In his famous statement “Give this job to Clamenza” for ticketing the men who behaved unpleasantly towards the undertaker’s daughter, the sign is given that Clamenza is the most reliable man, and Clamenza has never betrayed the father. In fact, I use this sentence frequently in daily life. For some reason, I like to say that if I’m going to have someone reliable do something, let’s give this job to clamenza. clamenza check

There is no need to explain the orange issue again and again. We know that anyone who holds an orange or comes next to an orange dies immediately or comes close to death. In one of the wedding scenes, Tessio, one of the biggest faces of the betrayers, takes an orange on the table and throws it into the air. We know that Tessio will die in the future, but we understand his betrayal from a different scene. I suggest you look at the scene where he dances with a little girl on her feet. The symbolism here is Tessio dancing with the little girl, which symbolizes his desire to contact smaller families outside his own family. tessio check

One of the clearest expressions that the other betrayer, Pauile, who sold Vito, will be in betrayal is Connie’s great appetite when she throws the gift money envelopes for the wedding into her bag. This man could do anything for money, and indeed he did. pauile check

The fact that Sonny even flirted with flies other than his wife during the wedding scenes was one of the clearest indicators that he could not be a family man, because Vito had told him this. Apart from this, it is very significant that the photographer breaks his camera and then throws money at the man to vent his anger. He wants to cover the consequences of his anger with money, but he cannot cover the consequences of his terrible anger with money in the future, so his men (or rather his brother-in-law) betray him and his life becomes as short as a butterfly. sonny check

When Barzini arrives at the wedding, he immediately catches sight of Fredo in his search for the weakest link to bring down the Corleone family. Fredo may not be characterless enough to sell his family, but since he has a weak mind, Fredo will open the door from the inside. We see that Fredo is not himself again and is the drunk man of the family, hitting on Michael’s new girlfriend Kay. So sir Fredo is weak, he is not himself and he will betray the family. fredo check

It is obvious that Michael will be the new leader of the family. Fredo is weak, Sonny is flirtatious and angry, and the father is on a quest. When Michael comes to the wedding with Kay, the father opens the window sill and starts watching Michael. It’s like he’s watching over her. This surveillance is a beautiful symbolism that Michael is the result of his quest. Also, Vito not wanting to take a photo without Michael in the group family photo is another sign that he is the most important piece of the puzzle. michael check

We understand from his conversation with Kay that Michael will be the head of the family and will exclude Tom Hagen from the family the first time. When Kay asks Michael about Tom, Michael introduces him as a good lawyer and says he will be a consiglieri. I think this shows that in his own mind he sees Tom as a good lawyer, but not a good consiglieri. Additionally, Tom’s loneliness is also depicted by the fact that his wife’s face is never shown in these scenes. tom hagen check

Luca Brasi is a loyal man, but he is not someone to be taken very seriously, and I will tell you why. We see that being invited to a wedding is never expected. While the latter expresses his gratitude to Vito, children run around at the most important part of his speech. In other words, his speech is important for him, but while the father was talking to him, he left the door open as if he did not care about him. There is a kind of frivolity that Vito, knowing that Brasi will die in the future, sends him to search for the Tataglia family. brasi check

We can see very clearly from the father’s sentence: “Make a living, but never interfere with family affairs” that groom Carlo will be betraying. The man said this, he doesn’t have a beard so they would listen. carlo check

And of course we come to Don Vito Corleone. He is a complete family man. He says that they are not murderers, which was his biggest dream: to have their surnames change to the names of bureaucrats in the future. He is busy, tired and always tries to keep the family together. When necessary, they abuse their children and harass them. He knows that this world is a cruel world. It becomes clear in the following scene that Amaa will be assassinated by Solozzo: Tom Hagen says that Solozzo wants to meet, but Johnny’s work is more important. He says you handle it, see you when you come. that is, he underestimates his enemy. Even though he told him that he took him very seriously during the meeting, he underestimated Solozzo and he paid a heavy price for it.
