April rains were like medicine for crops such as wheat, barley, canola and sunflower. The recent rains in the Thrace region, where the driest period of recent years has been experienced, gave farmers a sigh of relief. While farmers continue their agricultural activities, they hope that rainfall will continue in accordance with seasonal norms.
Head of Genetics and Bioengineering Department of Trakya University Faculty of Engineering and Director of Plant Breeding Center, said that wheat has entered a good season this year and that the rains following timely plantings have positive effects. Dr. Yalçın Kaya stated that the April rains were on time and came to the wheat like gold.
“We experienced the hottest December and January of the last 60-70 years”
Prof. emphasized that December and January were the hottest months of the last 60-70 years. Dr. Kaya said, “Evaporation losses were high because there was no snow and the winter was not cold. In some places, collapses and stresses had started in wheat. Yield is extremely important in plants. The rainfall just before the earing period was very good. Now is the most critical period for yield. These rainfalls are very important.” “It came right on time and like gold. 30-35 kilos of rain fell in the region, even up to 40 kilos in some places,” he said.
Prof. stated that the rains that last for a few days and for a long time eliminate this problem in wheat, which has a stress problem, and that it is sufficient. Dr. Kaya pointed out that timely rainfall will ensure that the wheat in the earing period goes through this process stress-free.
Prof. Dr. Kaya warns farmers about spraying
Reminding that farmers had a bad year for both wheat and sunflower last year, Prof. Dr. Kaya said, “It was a difficult year in terms of both prices and yield. They had the lowest yields of the last 15-20 years. Expectations for this year were very high. We were hopeful about winter precipitation. The April rains fell at the exact time when they were needed, which enabled us to continue our hopes in terms of yield. From now on, farmers should pay attention to fungal diseases caused by hot and humid weather. Rust disease, which is common in this period, is very important. We should definitely use pesticides against this. Let’s keep the flag leaves green until the milking period, because they will perform photosynthesis and this will increase the yield. “It means it feeds the plants more,” he said.
Emphasizing that the most important point that farmers should pay attention to from now on is spraying against rust disease, Prof. Dr. Kaya recommended that if there are people who do not fertilize, they should apply nitrogen fertilizer as soon as possible.

Prof. said that the wheat has started to rise. Dr. Yalçın Kaya said, “The field we are in rose very early. Because this field was stressed due to drought. It is almost knee-deep. This will eliminate the problem in terms of productivity,” he said.

Lalapaşa Chamber of Agriculture President Taner Öztürk said that the April rains were fruitful and said: “It fell in our region in sufficient amounts and very well. It will be very beneficial for the canolas to become grains rather than flowers. Some of the wheat grew ears and some were about to rise. These rains were very beneficial. “It also tempered the soil and caused the sunflowers to grow completely,” he said.
Öztürk stated that they estimate that canola crops will be very productive if another 15-20 kilos of rain falls in the region at the end of the month and the beginning of May, and warned farmers to spray pesticides on wheat and check their fields frequently.
