After the recent drought in Tekirdağ, Edirne and Kırklareli, April rains brought life to the fields planted with grains, especially wheat, and gave hope to farmers.

Following the drought in the lands of Thrace, which is one of the important grain warehouses of Turkey and where the majority of the population earns their living from farming, April rains became a lifeline to the cultivated areas. Farmers breathed a sigh of relief during the April rains, which were the lifeblood of crops such as wheat, barley, canola and sunflower.

Head of Genetics and Bioengineering Department of Trakya University Faculty of Engineering and Director of Plant Breeding Center Prof. Dr. Yalçın Kaya stated that after the recent drought, the April rains came to the cultivated areas like gold.

Explaining that December and January were the hottest months of the last 60-70 years, Prof. Dr. Kaya said, “Evaporation losses were high because there was no snow and the winter was not cold. In some places, collapses and stresses had started in wheat. Yield is extremely important in plants. The rainfall just before the earing period was very good. This is the most critical period for yield. “The rains came on time and like gold. 30-35 kilos of rain fell in the region, even up to 40 kilos in some places,” he said.

Stating that wheat, which has a stress problem due to the rain that is not effective for a long time in the region, has eliminated this problem and is sufficient, Kaya pointed out that timely rainfall will ensure that the wheat in the earing period goes through this process stress-free.

Prof. Dr. Warning from Kaya to farmers

Kaya, who warned farmers that they should be careful about fungal diseases that occur due to hot and humid weather in cultivated areas, said, “It was a difficult year in terms of both prices and yield. They received the lowest yields of the last 15-20 years. The expectations for this year were very high. We were hopeful about winter rains. April rains The heavy rainfall at the right time allowed us to continue our hopes in terms of productivity. From now on, farmers should pay attention to fungal diseases caused by hot and humid weather. The rust disease that is common in this period is very important. The flag leaf should be sprayed during the milking period. “Let’s keep them as green as they can be, because they will perform photosynthesis, which means more efficiency and more nutrition for the plants,” he said.

Referring to the importance of rust disease, Kaya recommended that those who do not fertilize should apply nitrogen fertilizer as soon as possible.

“When wheat is stressed, it goes into the heading stage”

Prof. said that the wheat has started to rise. Dr. Yalçın Kaya said, “The field we are in rose very early. Because this field was stressed due to drought. It is almost knee-deep. When the plant is stressed, it goes into the heading phase. In this respect, it was a critical period in terms of precipitation. The cool environment and precipitation coming from this soil “This situation will be reflected in the grains of the ears being full. This will eliminate the problem in terms of productivity,” he said.

Farmers also expressed that the rains made them happy and said that they were afraid at first and then breathed a sigh of relief with the April rains.
