EUROPEAN UNION
The European Parliament, European Commission and EU Council, the three main institutions of the 27-member bloc, have imposed bans on TikTok on staff devices.
As part of the European Parliament’s ban, MPs and staff were also advised to remove the TikTok application from their personal devices.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
US authorities have ordered government agencies to delete TikTok from federal devices and systems due to data security concerns.
More than half of the 50 US states have banned the app from official devices, as have Congress and the US armed forces.
In the US, the House of Representatives gave the Chinese company Bytedance 12 months to sell TikTok, otherwise it approved the bill that would ban the platform across the country.
AUSTRALIA
TikTok is not allowed on devices issued by the Australian federal government.
Attorney General Mark Dreyfus said he made the decision after receiving advice from the country’s intelligence and security agencies.
NORWAY
Norway’s parliament banned TikTok from work devices after the country’s Ministry of Justice warned that the app should not be installed on phones issued to government employees. The Speaker said TikTok should not be available on devices with access to parliamentary systems and should be removed as soon as possible. The country’s capital, Oslo, and its second largest city, Bergen, also called on municipal employees to remove TikTok from their work phones.
ENGLAND
The UK government banned TikTok from all government electronic devices on March 16, 2023.
A security review by the Government Cabinet Office ruled to ban the video-sharing app due to fears of interference and surveillance by the Chinese government.
Speaking on the day the ban was announced, Oliver Dowden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “The security of sensitive government information must come first, which is why we are banning this app from government devices today. The use of other apps that leak data will also be kept under review.”
In a press release, the UK government explained how TikTok was able to access and collect “a range of data on the device, including contacts, user content and geolocation data.”
DENMARK
Denmark ordered TikTok banned on work devices in March 2023. The country’s Ministry of Defense cited security concerns and ordered employees to remove the app as soon as possible.
AZERBAIJAN
Azerbaijan banned the video-based social media platform TikTok, citing state security.

NEW ZELAND
New Zealand announced the ban of TikTok on all parliamentary devices on March 17, 2023.
The country’s MPs were informed via email from the parliamentary service: “The service has determined that the risks are unacceptable in the current New Zealand parliamentary environment.
“The decision to block the TikTok app was made based on our own analysis and following discussions with colleagues across government and internationally.” It was said.
CANADA
In line with other countries, Canada banned TikTok from all government mobile devices in February this year. Treasury Board President Mona Fortier said the partial ban was because the app poses “an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security.”
“The decision to remove and block TikTok from government mobile devices is being taken as a precaution and is in line with the approach of our international partners, especially given concerns about the legal regime governing information collected from mobile devices,” he said.
TAIWAN
TikTok was banned from Taiwan’s government devices in December 2022. This move comes after the FBI warned that TikTok poses a national security risk.
US FBI director Chris Wray warned against the use of TikTok in his speech at the University of Michigan a few days before the ban.
Wray said China has the ability to control what users see on the app by controlling its recommendation algorithm. In this way, he said, the country “can manipulate the content and use it for influence operations if they want.”
NEPAL
Nepal announced that it would ban the TikTok application in November 2023, saying that social harmony and goodwill were disrupted due to the “misuse” of the popular video application and that the demand for controlling the application increased.
WILL IT BE BANNED IN TURKEY?
Following the US’s decision on TikTok, it is expected that 3 Internet Exchange Points (IDNs) will be established in Turkey, in Ankara and Istanbul.
Thanks to the IDN, TikTok data will be more tightly controlled by security authorities.
Otherwise, it was stated that banning TikTok in Turkey would be on the agenda.
