After working as the ‘Asia Director’ at the World Bank in the USA for a while, Korhan Berzeg retired and started living in his house in Büyükada, Istanbul. He was never heard from again after he went for a walk with his trained Doberman dog ‘Tina’ on June 17th. While the search efforts initiated in the region by AFAD, Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK), Ankara Gendarmerie Special Public Order Command (JÖAK) and volunteer search and rescue teams, as well as tracking and cadaver dogs, yielded no results, Berzeg’s dog Tina was found 29 days after she disappeared, 74 days later. On the morning of August, he returned to his home in Armutlu District. ‘Tina’ was also included in the searches. ‘Tina’, who was put on a GPS and starved to get to the place where she was detained for 74 days, returned home each time. The dog, which did not contribute to the work, was handed over to Angela Berzeg after a while. While Tina and Angela Berzeg were returning to their home in Büyükada, Istanbul, the search efforts continued by increasing the number of teams and were terminated on October 24, 130 days after Korhan Berzeg disappeared.

BONE PIECES WERE FOUND AFTER 312 DAYS

312 days after Berzeg’s disappearance, on April 23, at around 13.30, Gelgeç Neighborhood Headman Ahmet Gülay, while inspecting the water coming to the neighborhood, approached Berzeg by the stream in the forest, 3.5 kilometers away from Korhan Berzeg’s house in Armutlu District. He found his identity card and credit card, clothing and bone fragments believed to belong to humans. Following Gülay’s notification, many gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region.

ID AND CREDIT CARDS WERE FOUND FROM THE WALLET IN THE POCKET OF THE TROUSERS, WHICH WERE TROYED.

During the crime scene investigation, a brown wallet with shredded legs was found in the pocket of the trousers, as well as a credit card from 3 different banks issued in the name of Korhan Berzeg, 1 bank card, a shredded Istanbul free transportation card, an Istanbul Blue card, and a driver’s license issued in the name of Korhan Berzeg. and his identity card, 5 pieces of 10 TL bills, one of which was torn apart, 1 piece of 100 TL bills, 1 piece of 50 TL bills, 1 vehicle key and various keys were found.

After the work of the Public Prosecutor and the gendarmerie teams at the scene, bone fragments, clothing and materials were taken for examination.

BONE PIECES WITHOUT TISSUE ON THEM WERE SENT TO ISTANBUL

While bone fragments without tissue were sent to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute for DNA testing, Korhan Berzeg’s daughter, Nisa Berzeg, came to Turkey from England to give a DNA sample. Nisa Berzeg, who gave a blood sample at Gönen State Hospital, where she came with her mother Angela Berzeg yesterday, is returning to Istanbul. As a result of the comparison, it will be determined whether the bone piece belongs to Korhan Berzeg, who has been missing for 315 days.

TRACKED WITH 4 CADAVER DOGS

The search efforts, which started on April 24, continue in the area where Korhan Berzeg’s clothes, belongings and bone fragments were found. 1 cadaver dog and the number of personnel increased from 59. The teams, with 4 cadaver dogs, continue their search in the Armutlu District Fındıklı Creek location, where Korhan Berzeg’s house is located, and in the forest in Turplu District and Gelgeç District. While the teams carry out detailed field scanning with cadaver dogs in case other bone fragments are covered with vegetation depending on weather conditions and remain underground, the fact that the terrain is rugged and covered with dense vegetation makes the work difficult.
