In the first quarter of the year, 3 million 741 thousand dollars of income was obtained from apricot seeds, Malatya’s product with geographical indication registration certificate, against 1079 tons of exports.
In Malatya, known as the “apricot capital of the world”, not only apricots but also their seeds contribute to the city’s economy.
Malatya Commodity Exchange President Ramazan Özcan told the AA correspondent that apricot seeds are a very important item in meeting the farmers’ production costs.
Reminding that the seed is a geographically registered product, Özcan said, “We are now exporting the seeds we obtain from apricots at the prices we sold apricots in the past. When we look at it from the producer’s perspective, apricot seeds are an important source of income. Apricot seeds strengthen the producer’s hand in terms of labor and other expense items.” he said.
Explaining that the income obtained from apricot seed exports is pleasing, Özcan continued as follows:
“In the first quarter of the year, we exported 1079 tons of apricot kernels and earned an income of 3 million 741 dollars. In the past, since no significant income could be obtained from seeds, expense items were reflected in dried apricots. In the stable markets we have achieved in dried apricots, we are currently continuing to export seeds.”
Pointing out that there were years when seed exports reached 8 thousand tons and that the export figures change every year, Özcan said, “This is due to the high amount of almonds produced in America. In periods when the price of almonds is very high, there is interest in apricot seeds. In years when almond production increases, we experience a decline.” ” said.
Özcan stated that there is a visible increase in the income obtained from apricot kernel exports and said, “In the past, the income we earned from seed exports was one quarter of this. Currently, apricot kernels are close to almond prices; industrial almonds are 4 dollars and apricot kernels are 3.5 dollars.
