Mesut MADAN/BURDUR, (DHA) – BURDUR Mayor Ali Orkun Ercengiz stated that the Burdur region is facing an incredible global climate crisis and said, “If the drought continues like this, we will not be able to find drinking water.”

Burdur Mayor Ali Orkun Ercengiz met with the central neighborhood and central village headmen who took office in the 31 March Local Government General Elections in İstasyon Park. Stating that the region is facing an incredible global climate crisis, Mayor Ercengiz said, “We are at the end of April. We are experiencing a dry winter and unfortunately a bad spring. I can guess that if there is no irrigation in the villages right now, it seems that we have no chance of harvesting crops this summer. Water is strategic.” We use groundwater. While our pumps in both Gökpınar and İnsuyu were extracting water from approximately 50-55 meters in 2014, we are now trying to extract water from 210 meters. Let alone that, we are entering a period where we need to reconsider the water, agriculture and livestock policies of the region. If it continues like this, we will not be able to find drinking water, including our villages. Unfortunately, with the path and method we have chosen, we are now doing agriculture based on animal husbandry. “It’s a negative picture for us,” he said.

Stating that the operational wastewater treatment plant is the largest source feeding Burdur Lake with a discharge of 200 liters per second, Mayor Ercengiz noted that with the completion of the environmental permit process of the wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater will be used in green areas and industry after water analysis studies.
