In the greenhouses in Bilecik’s Söğüt district, tomato and cucumber seedlings are planted in the soil before the summer season, with the intense work of the workers.

It is built on nearly 4 thousand acres of land in the region.

“Small climatic area separated from surrounding climatic areas” Residents of the district, which has a microclimate defined as ‘Growing’, grow lettuce in the winter and tomatoes and cucumbers in the summer in their greenhouses.

Workers come to the greenhouses early in the morning and plant the seedlings in the soil. The workers’ intense work continues until dark.

During the care process, as the seedlings grow, the branches are loosened by wrapping them with rope.

Cucumbers are harvested in mid-May and tomatoes from June onwards.

Products go from Bilecik to Istanbul

Vegetables are classified, placed in crates and loaded onto trucks and sent to sales points in the Marmara Region, especially in Istanbul.

Headman of Yakacık village, Hüseyin Yıldırım, said that the winter season went well and the producers were smiling.

“We are in the greenhouse until the evening”

Stating that they started planting tomatoes and cucumbers after the preparation phase, Yıldırım gave the following information:

We are in the greenhouse summer and winter. We also provide employment to agricultural workers. We have 1,500-2 thousand agricultural workers. They come to the greenhouse around 06.30-07.00 in the morning and do the tying and wrapping work. We are in the greenhouse until the evening.

“Bumblebees are used”

Yıldırım stated that they benefit from bumblebees in the flowering of the products. Explaining that they do not use any pollinators thanks to bees, Yıldırım said:

Bees wander around the greenhouses for about 1.5 months. The drugs we use are also approved by the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Our products are completely natural.

Producer Kayhan Kayadibi stated that they planted tomatoes and cucumbers after harvesting the lettuce they grew in the winter.

“New season, new hope”

Stating that they purchased their seedlings last month, Kayadibi said, “New season, new hope. We are hopeful for the future.” he said.
