The final harvest of the product started in Bilecik, one of the provinces where green onions are produced the most in Turkey, and is sent to many provinces of Turkey.

During the final harvest of green onions in the greenhouses in the villages of Söğüt and İnhisar districts of Bilecik, one of the vegetable production centers of the Marmara Region, they are cleaned and sent to sales points. While the region, which has a microclimate feature due to its climate, is also called ‘Little Antalya of the Marmara’, the green onion harvest, which started around December in the villages where greenhouse agriculture is practiced, has come to an end. Women, who make up the majority of those working in the harvest and cleaning of green onions, clean the products collected in the field from the mud and turn them into bundles after completing their morning household chores. Women, who bear the burden and effort of the harvest, work in every stage of the spring onion, such as planting, dismantling, picking, cleaning, washing and packaging. Cleaned green onions are sent to many provinces of Turkey, including the Marmara Region.

“We send it to metropolitan cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa”

Giving information about the spring onions harvested this year, Yakacık Village Headman Hüseyin Yıldırım said, “We are in the plain called the little Antalya of the Marmara. Our spring onion harvest has started along with lettuce. We produce a certain amount of spring onions and send them to big cities. Spring onions grow on 50 decares in our village.” There are 60 decares of it. We buy dried onions and plant them fresh. As our own village, we buy 500 tons and 600 tons of onions. Of course, there is more production outside. We process the fresh onions in Istanbul, Ankara. “This is how we send it to metropolitan cities like Bursa,” he said.

“We disassemble it, then we clean it inside, we clean it, we package it well and send it off.”

Yıldırım continued his statement: “We dismantle it, then we clean it inside, we clean it, we package it well and send it. Last year it was not this much, this year the yield is higher. For example, there are at least 100-150 tons more planting than last year. The price is not exactly right now, here we are 30 tons.” “It is green between -40 liras. Of course, it varies,” he said.

“Spring onion crafting is a bit difficult”

Spring onion producer Kamile Aktaş said, “There are 8 decares here. We are making spring onions and planting them at this time. That is, we are doing it at the end of this month. After the onion is finished, we start and plant tomatoes. Now the prices are low. They go up and down. So when it comes to onion labor, “It’s a little difficult,” he said.

On the other hand, more than 7,600 tons of green onions are produced annually in an area of 1,877 decares throughout the province.
