Sinop is founded on Boztepe Cape and Peninsula, where the Black Sea coastline tapers the most towards the north. The city is located between 41 degrees 12 minutes and 42 degrees 06 minutes north latitude and 34 degrees 14 minutes and 35 degrees 26 minutes east longitude. The surface area of the province is 5862 square kilometers, and this area covers 0.8% of the country’s total surface area. There is Kastamonu in the west, Çorum in the south, Samsun in the southeast, and the Black Sea in the north. Of its 475 kilometers long borders in total, 300 kilometers are land and 175 kilometers are seaside. The mountains extend parallel to the sea. The mountains rising in the northwest descend as they approach the Central District coast and form coastal plains. So, which mountains are there in Sinop?

WHICH MOUNTAINS ARE IN SINOP?

The largest mountains of Sinop Province are the İsfendiyar (Küre) mountains, which extend parallel to the Black Sea in the east-west direction. This mountain range is generally not very high, but sometimes contains hills and peaks ranging from 1500 to 1800 meters. Isfendiyar (Küre) mountains attract attention with their location on the Alpine-Himalayan fold belt, which formed at the beginning of the 3rd Geological period. The most important feature of these mountains is that they are young and high, they have not been eroded as much as the old mountains. Although the mountains within the borders of Sinop Province are very high, they create difficulties and difficulties in transportation between the inner regions and the coast. This situation arises from the province’s relationship with the inner parts and the dense and continuous mountains.

Küre Mountains form the rugged terrain of the region. The mountains rising in the northwest descend and form coastal plains as they approach 9 km from the central coast. Besides the Boyabat depression area, Karaoluk Hill (1313 m) and Kuzuluk Hill (1125 m) are important elevations. The most important mountain range on the Küre Mountains is Zindan Mountain (1730 m). Zindan Mountain, the highest point of Sinop, is located in Ayancık district. Other important peaks in the Küre Mountains, which enter the Western Black Sea system, include Sarıdökük Hill (1660 m) and Çangal Mountain (1605 m). There are also peaks on the mountains such as Göktepe (1375 m), Soyuk Tepe (1455 m) and Elmadağı (900 m).

Küre Mountains

Küre Mountains, one of the mountains that form three parallel mountain ranges inland from the coast in the Western Black Sea Region, rise on wide ridges and have an elevation of more than 1,500 meters behind Ayancık. The highest peak of these mountains reaches 2,019 meters on Yaralıgöz Mountain. The east-west length between Sinop and Bartın is more than 300 kilometers.

Mountain ranges separate Kastamonu and some of its districts from the coastal zone. The rugged Küre Mountains create microclimate areas by causing climate elements to change in short distances. The Black Sea climate is active in the parts of the mountains close to the coast, but the Continental climate becomes evident in the inner parts. Temperature fluctuations, high temperature differences, increased frost events and delays until spring are the characteristics of the inner regions. In the plateaus far from the sea, the amount of precipitation is half as much as on the coast. The coastal regions of this mountain are in the semi-humid climate class, while the inner regions are in the semi-arid climate class.

Çangal Mountain

Çangal Mountain

Çangal Mountains is a mountain range distributed on the borders of Samsun and Sinop provinces. These mountains, with an average height of 1500 meters, together with the Canik Mountains, are a mountain range extending along the Central Black Sea.
