The expected day has come for the Light Rail System Project, which the people of Trabzon have been waiting for for many years.
With the decision signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Rail System Project was transferred to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Protocol signed
A protocol was signed today for the project to be implemented by the Ministry.

“The application has been revolutionary”
Pointing out that public transportation has become more vital in the last 15-20 years, Eyigün continued his words as follows:
“When we look at the history of the Republic, the application that we can call the rail system contribution to metropolitan municipalities from the general budget, initiated by our President in 2010, was revolutionary. Thus, the Ministry of Transport and the metropolitan municipality worked from A to Z by receiving the necessary allowance for the rail system line from the general budget of the relevant metropolitan city. “Good works started to come out with their unity.”
“The need for a rail system has emerged”
Eyigün gave examples of the works in question and said: “As cities grow, the transportation needs required by transportation master plans increase. Trabzon also has a history of 2-3 years. With the updating of transportation main lines, the need for a rail system arose.” he said.
“When we look at both ends, we are talking about 32 kilometers.”
Drawing attention to the details of the light rail system line, Eyigün said:
“Therefore, a long planning, I can say physically, was required here. In this sense, to date, there are 970 kilometers of rail system operations in 12 provinces in Turkey. Our ministry has carried out 433 kilometers of this. In today’s protocol, the longest rail system work with a single protocol begins for Trabzon When we look at both ends, we are talking about 32 kilometers. In fact, when we put it into practice, it may be even longer, according to our studies and analysis. In other words, we can say that it will be the longest rail system work of our ministry in a city.
“We will show an example of city construction site management”
Eyigün stated that the construction phase is planned to start in 2025 and said, “We think and plan to realize this project by showing an example of urban construction site management with an approach that does not disturb the public, does not disrupt traffic, supports real daily life and carries out construction, as we have shown in other cities.” said.
“We want to end this period”
Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç also gave information about the importance and details of the Trabzon Light Rail Project and stated that they want to follow this work month, day and hour from today and finalize it this term.
“With the commissioning of our city hospital, it will be a busier area.”
Giving technical information about the light rail system line to be built, Genç said:
“The project is being started with the aim of serving the area with the highest circulation in our city, where 824 thousand people live in general, especially Akçaabat, Yomra and Ortahisar, where 500 thousand people live. In other words, the area between Akçaabat and Yomra is planned, but the initial phase of our project will be more intense with the commissioning of our city hospital.” Hopefully, we will start the phase with the Akyazı-Meydan area, that is, the 8.7-kilometer area. Then, we will consider our university, namely the Akyazı-Airport axis and the 16-kilometer part, in the form of our Ortahisar connection. “We want to continue.”
“We started working quickly to meet the expectations in the city”
Reminding that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also brought up the project in question during his visit to Trabzon, Genç said, “In a sense, we quickly started the next process by prioritizing this project in our city and working to meet the expectations in the city. “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our esteemed President on behalf of our city and its citizens.” he said.

After the speeches, Genç and Eyigün signed the Transfer Protocol of the Rail System Line.
