KOCAELİ (AA) – In the case regarding the death of a high school student after being beaten in Kocaeli’s Izmit district, 2 defendants were sentenced to 8 years in prison, 1 defendant was sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison, and 2 defendants were acquitted.
The detained defendants HMK and YA, who were under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, attended the hearing of the case heard by the Kocaeli 7th High Criminal Court via SEGBİS from Sincan Children and Youth Closed Penal Institution. The defendant YK and the party lawyers, who were released from the previous hearing and an arrest warrant was issued upon objection, were present in the hall, but the unarrested defendants YSK and ABK did not come to the hearing.
After hearing the defense of the defendant’s lawyers regarding the opinion on the merits announced in the last hearing, the defendants HMK, YA and YK, who were asked for their last words, stated that they had nothing to say.
Announcing its decision after a break, the court sentenced HMK and Y.A to 12 years in prison each for the crime of “injury aggravated by its consequences”. Since the defendants were in the 15-18 age group at the time of the incident, the sentence was reduced to 8 years each.
The committee sentenced the defendant Y.K. to 7 years and 6 months in prison for the same crime, and reduced the sentence to 3 years and 9 months because the defendant was in the 12-15 age group at the time of the incident. It was decided to acquit the undetained defendants ABK and YSK, who were tried for the crime of “intentional incitement to murder”.
While it was decided to continue the current situation of the detained defendants, YK was arrested and sent to prison after the hearing ended.

Victim Kıvanç Uman’s father Orhan and mother Derya Uman answered journalists’ questions in front of the courthouse after the hearing.
“The life of a 15-year-old child cannot be this cheap.” Father Uman said and stated that they would object to the decision.

A fight broke out between high school students Kıvanç Uman (16) and YK, YA and HMK in the park on İnönü Street in İzmit district on May 15, 2023. Uman, who was seriously injured due to the blows he received, died in the hospital where he was treated for 4 days.
YK, YA and HMK, who were detained after the incident, were arrested, and it was decided that ABK and YSK, who were included in the investigation as a result of the children dragged into crime, the statements of the witnesses and the investigations, would be tried without detention.
