Economist Korhan Berzeg, in Armutlu Village (Neighbourhood) of Gönen district of Balıkesir, left his house with his dog Tina for a morning walk on June 17, 2023, and was never heard from again. The search efforts carried out under the coordination of Balıkesir Provincial AFAD Directorate lasted 130 days. The work was terminated after no trace could be found of Berzeg, who was also the teacher of the Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek.

The first trace of Berzeg was found 182 days after the work was completed.

LAWYERS SPOKE TO ODATV

Days later, while the agencies wrote the first trace of Berzeg in unison, Berzeg Family’s lawyers Gülcan Odaman and Emre Akkaş spoke to Odatv.

Lawyers noted that Berzeg’s wallet, driver’s license, credit card and identity card, as well as torn pieces of clothing thought to belong to the 83-year-old economist and bone fragments thought to belong to humans were found in the forest area near the village where he lived. Odaman and Akkaş stated that the bone fragments, wallet and clothing pieces were not found on top of each other or side by side, but in close proximity to each other.

BUT PIECES OF BONES WERE FOUND, NOT A WHOLE BODY

The lawyers also added that a whole body could not be created from the bone fragments found.

GENDARMERIE STARTED INVESTIGATION AGAIN

Lawyer Gülcan Odaman said about the development that took place days after the search efforts were stopped: “After a person found and reported it, the Gendarmerie started an investigation on the issue again.”

“THERE IS A CONFIDENTIALITY DECISION IN THE FILE”

While the lawyers stated that there was a confidentiality order in the file, they said that Berzeg’s wallet, pieces of clothing and bone fragments were found by a villager living nearby.

FORENSIC MEDICINE PROCESS WILL BE PROCESSED

Noting that the forensic process will continue from this moment on, Odaman and Akkaş stated that the final conclusion will be reached as to whether the bones and clothing pieces belong to Korhan Berzeg. On the other hand, Lawyer Emre Akkaş said about the forensic medicine process, “We expect to get results within 2-3 weeks.”

“FAMILY DESTROYED”

While Akkaş said that the family was waiting for the process to be concluded, he said, “They were very devastated. On the one hand, being found is a result, but on the other hand, it is a negative result. Angela is very sad. We are waiting for the result right now.”
