AFAD Edirne Provincial Director Ali Altındal announced that a search and rescue training area will be established in cooperation with AFAD and Trakya University.

In his presentation at the Edirne Provincial General Assembly November meetings, Altındal said that the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes once again revealed the importance of human resources with search and rescue and disaster training.

Stating that the number of AFAD volunteers increased after the earthquakes, Altındal said, “We have approximately 6 thousand volunteers in Edirne. We are working in this context. We want to make Edirne the center of the Balkans in terms of search and rescue training by creating a search and rescue training area at Trakya University.” said.

Altındal stated that studies have been initiated in cooperation with AFAD and Trakya University in terms of establishing an education area.

Stating that they will provide training to tens of thousands of people every year, Altındal said, “We will provide training to 45 thousand students at our Trakya University, our public personnel, volunteers and citizens. The search and rescue training area will also serve students who come to Edirne from the Balkans for education.” he said.

Altındal also thanked AFAD volunteer members of the Provincial General Assembly, Tamer Karadağ and Mustafa Üstün, who participated in search and rescue efforts during the earthquake.

Answering the questions asked by the council members about seismicity, Altındal said, “We cannot say ‘There will be an earthquake today’ on the fault line close to the south of Edirne. We expect a magnitude 6 earthquake to occur in approximately 30 years.” he said.
