Although the weather started to be sunny in Istanbul today, people encountered heavy rain in the evening hours. After a rainy and cloudy day, there was a natural event that had been seen very rarely before.
In Istanbul, a 7 kilometer thick cloud covered the sun for 5 minutes and it got dark. Those who saw those moments experienced a panic for a short time.
IT HAS DOWN AND RARE MAMMATUS CLOUDS APPEARED IN OUR COUNTRY
After a hot and sunny day, Istanbulites encountered a heavy downpour in the evening hours, which has not been seen in recent months. While the traffic was locked on the roads, those who tried to return to their homes at the time of iftar had a difficult time. Throughout the week, we enter the rainy period locally throughout the country.
Weather apps may show rain, but that doesn’t mean it will rain all day. For example, partly cloudy weather in the morning may turn into thunderstorms towards the evening. This is exactly what happened in Istanbul today. After the hot day, it got dark in the evening and mammatus clouds, which are rare in our country, appeared.
After the clouds, a terrible thunderstorm began. Meteorology stated that the rainy weather will continue in places throughout the week.
WHAT ARE MAMMATUS CLOUDS?
These clouds, which are called mammatus (mammatocumulus) or mammalian cumulus in Turkish, are usually seen on the ocean and great sea coasts. In this type of cloud, smooth rounded swells form at the bottom of the cloud masses. These puffs create a gorgeous look. Especially in the United States and Australia, mammatus clouds are frequently seen. These cloud types can also be seen in our country. However, it has been observed very rarely in recent years.
