Rami Barracks, the 3rd largest barracks in Istanbul, opens today as a library and living space. The library, which will be officially opened by President Tayyip Erdoğan, will host its visitors from Monday. Rami Library, Turkey’s largest and one of the few libraries in Europe, has been designed as a large campus with individual and group reading halls, activity areas, workshop spaces, a disability center prepared for people with disabilities, and a large campus with different uses such as conversations, seminars and exhibitions. . The campus, which will appeal to everyone from children to young people, from university students to academicians, will serve 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The building, which was built as a military barracks 250 years ago, continued to be used for military purposes until 1971. With the declaration of Istanbul as the cultural capital in 2010, the building was brought to the agenda to be turned into a library, and its restoration was completed in a period of 17 months.

  • Rami Barracks Library General Coordinator Osman Zorlu said that they are planning a life cycle starting from the age of 0-3 and extending to the specialization area in the library, which has a seating area of ​​4,200 people, and said that they will serve with approximately 2 million books. Zorlu said, “We will open not only the library, but also the 51 thousand square meter landscape area as the Nation’s Garden. Citizens who want to come to our library, which will be open 24 hours a day, can use both the garden and the library and benefit from our soup, tea and cake treats. We will also support students who are preparing for university by distributing free test books.”

120 THOUSAND RARE ARTICLES

The Turkish Manuscripts Institution will continue its services here with 120,000 rare printed works. The chemistry and biology laboratory, where thousand-year-old manuscripts are restored, is also among the sections inside this place. Opposite the hospital, there is an exhibition hall of manuscripts. The preparations for the first exhibition have already been completed in the venue where exhibitions will be held quarterly. Archiving Department Head Nil Baydar, who also gave the good news of a scientific journal in which the studies conducted here are discussed, said, “We will continue to continue the activities we have been carrying out for 10 years by supporting them with seminars and symposiums.”

The Rami Library was awarded as Turkey’s first library with a sustainability certificate, as it was repaired in accordance with its originality. In order to protect this magnificent work, efforts have been initiated to include it on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. In the 51 thousand square meter landscape area of ​​the campus, which has 220 thousand square meters of land; There are 3 green amphitheaters, 4 activity squares, a thousand square meters of biological pond, 2 km promenade, more than 30 tree species. About 700 of these trees were newly planted. There is also a museum inside the campus. All artifacts removed during the restoration work are repaired, cleaned and exhibited in the museum.
