WHO IS ISMIHAN SULTAN?

Esmehan Sultan was born in Manisa Palace in 1545. She was married to Sokullu Mehmed Pasha in 1564 and they had two children from this marriage. These are İbrahim Han and Gülruh Sultan. A year later, Semiz Ali Pasha died and his wife became the Grand Vizier. Now both have become powerful and effective. In September 1566, upon the death of his grandfather, Süleyman I, he came to Istanbul with his mother and siblings. In his father’s reign, the authority of the state passed to Esmehan Sultan’s wife, Sokullu Mehmed Pasha, and for this reason, Esmehan also had a great influence and power. It is not known that he was involved in state affairs, but he probably left this to his mother Nurbanu Sultan and Zevci Sokullu Mehmed Pasha and did not interfere.

His father died in 1574 and was succeeded by his brother III. Murad ascended the throne. Esmehan Sultan never liked Safiye Sultan, the son of Murad III, like her mother. Therefore, he wants to get rid of Safiye. According to some sources, the first concubine presented to Murad III after Safiye Sultan was sent by Esmehan Sultan. He was widowed after the murder of his wife Sokullu Mehmed Pasha in 1579. After the death of the first wife, Özdemiroğlu wanted to marry Osman Pasha, but for some reason she did not want to. Then Esmehan Sultan married either the governor of Budin Kalaylıkoz Ali Pasha or Nişancı Feridun Pasha. She died while giving birth in Istanbul in 1585, and the baby died forty days later.
