Brazilian Claudia de Albuquerque Celada was working in Aspen, Colorado, through an exchange program when she became ill.
The 23-year-old patient was hospitalized in February with complaints of paralysis, dizziness, double vision and shortness of breath. The young girl was diagnosed with botulism two weeks after she was hospitalized.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines the disease as ‘a rare disease caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves, causing difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis and even death.’
As for what caused Claudia’s illness, health officials believe it may have been caused by the soup and warn others not to make this mistake.
Claudia had purchased ready-packaged soup, and although tests on soup samples from the same market returned negative results for botulism, it is believed that the way the Brazilian woman stored the soup may have caused her illness.
