WHAT IS PANDAS SYNDROME?

Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) is a type of neurological disorder seen in children. PANDAS is characterized by the sudden and rapid onset of symptoms of childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or tic disorder. Streptococcal infections are believed to be a triggering factor in the emergence of these symptoms.

PANDAS is associated with an autoimmune reaction that occurs as a result of the immune system’s response to streptococcal bacteria. This reaction can lead to inflammation affecting certain areas of the brain, ultimately causing changes in the child’s behavior, emotional state, and cognitive functions.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PANDAS?

Symptoms of PANDAS may include sudden and severe obsessive-compulsive symptoms (e.g., repetitive thoughts, obsessive behavior), tics (sudden and involuntary movements or vocalizations), anxiety, tantrums, insomnia, and other behavioral changes.

Treatment usually involves treating the streptococcal infection with antibiotics, and immunomodulatory medications may be used to relieve symptoms. In some cases, psychotherapy or other treatments may also be needed to control symptoms.
