US researchers found that people who took reflux medications were more likely to suffer from severe headaches than those who did not.

Drugs linked to painful symptoms include omeprazole, esomeprazole, cimetidine, famotidine and antacid supplements, the researchers said.

From the University of Maryland, Dr. Margaret Slavin, “Given the widespread use of acid-reducing medications and their potential effects on migraines, these results require further investigation. These medications are often thought to be overprescribed, and new research has shown other risks, such as an increased risk of dementia, with long-term use of proton pump inhibitors.” said.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) drugs, such as omeprazole sold as Prilosec and Losec, and esomeprazole sold as Nexium, are known to be commonly used to relieve symptoms.

The latest study, published in Neurology Clinical Practice, examined how these drugs and other heartburn medications, including H2 blockers, affect people’s risk of migraines.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS OF 11 THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE EXAMINED

In their study, researchers followed the data of 11 thousand 818 people and examined prescription drugs.

While one quarter of people taking PPIs had migraine or severe headaches, this rate was 19 percent in those not taking the drug.

While a quarter of those who took H2 blockers had severe headaches, the rate of those who did not take these drugs was recorded as 20 percent.

While 22 percent of those taking antacid supplements experienced severe headaches, this rate was stated to be 20 percent of those who did not take antacids.

Dr. Slavin, “It’s important to note that many people need acid-reducing medications to manage acid reflux or other conditions. People who have migraines or severe headaches and are taking these medications or supplements should talk to their doctor about whether they should continue.” he said.
