Benign prostatic hyperplasia occurs when the prostate tissue grows and compresses the urinary tract and can cause urination problems. HoLEP appears as a closed prostate surgery method to solve this problem. During the procedure, prostate tissue is cut using a laser and sent to the bladder, which is then ground up and removed. In this way, the symptoms caused by prostate enlargement are relieved and the urinary tract is opened. Regarding HoLEP, Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital Urology Department Head Prof. Dr. Yusuf Özlem İlbey made striking statements.

HOW IS HOLEP SURGERY DONE, WHAT IS IT?

HoLEP has many advantages over other prostate surgeries. The ability to treat large prostates in a closed manner, the absence of serious bleeding and the low risk of recurrence of the disease make this method preferable. The procedure is performed under general or partial anesthesia, and the risk of urinary incontinence is minimized by protecting the muscles that hold urine. In this way, it is completely different from TURP, which is a closed prostate surgery.

RECOVERY AFTER HOLEP SURGERY

After surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital overnight and can return to normal activities within a few weeks. Temporary complaints such as burning sensation in urination may occur, but they usually improve with treatment. Serious bleeding seen in closed surgery is not observed because the tissues are cut with a laser called ‘holmium’. The most important thing is that prostate enlargement does not recur after HoLEP surgery and the patients’ quality of life increases.

THOSE USING BLOOD THINTERS AND THOSE WHO SHOULD BE CAREFUL

Special precautions may be required for patients taking blood thinners for HoLEP prostate surgery. Prof. Dr. Yusuf Özlem İlbey points out that if the patient uses more than one blood thinning medication, it is necessary to stop one of the medications, if possible. However, if patients are taking medications containing only acetylsalicylic acid, such as ecopirin, baby aspirin, or aspirin, they may be suitable for HoLEP prostate surgery. He states that for patients using Coumadin, it is recommended to perform HoLEP surgery by giving low molecular weight heparin.

THINGS THAT THOSE WHO WANT TO HOLEP AND HAVE CHILDREN SHOULD CONSIDER

Stating that HoLEP surgery does not have any negative effects on sexuality, İlbey explains that after this surgery, the semen goes from the bladder neck to the urinary bladder openly and is excreted with urine. However, it is important for those who want to have children to take this into consideration. Pregnancy by normal means may be a problem because the semen is excreted naturally. However, in vitro fertilization is always an option for couples who want to have children. With this method, their chances of having children continue.
