Erdogan: Artificial obstacles are being brought against our alliance law

In his speech at the dinner held at a restaurant by the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) Turkey-USA Business Council, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that Turkey and the United States are two friendly countries, allies and strategic partners with deep-rooted ties.

Expressing that the multidimensional cooperation between the two countries has made great contributions to the establishment of peace and stability in many regions of the world, Erdoğan said that they have similar views on many issues from energy to food security in a wide geography from Ukraine to the Balkans, from the Middle East to Africa. told.

Erdoğan reminded that they decided to establish a Turkey-USA strategic mechanism with US President Joe Biden in Rome last year in order to further the existing consensus of ideas and interests.

Stating that they continue their efforts to solve problems with a realistic and forward-looking perspective, while developing relations on the basis of common interests with the mechanism that was put into practice in April, Erdoğan said:

“The world economy has been facing serious difficulties since 2020. First, the epidemic crisis, then the Russia-Ukraine war, caused great difficulties in supply chains in all fields, especially in energy and food. Many countries are struggling to cope with the highest inflation rates of the last 40-50 years. “The Turkish economy has shown a successful outlook in overcoming all these challenges with its strong performance in growth, exports and employment. Thanks to the supportive steps we have taken at a time when the global economy is restructuring and predictability is decreasing, and the dynamism of the private sector, we have managed to maintain the resilience and attractiveness of our economy.”

Turkish Economy Model

Erdogan said that Turkey achieved the fastest growth in the last 10 years, with a rate of 11 percent last year.

Pointing out that this is the highest growth rate recorded among the G-20 countries, Erdoğan made the following assessments:

“While the world economy is facing serious contractions, we achieved growth of 7.5 percent in the first quarter and 7.6 percent in the second quarter of 2022. Despite the epidemic, we continued our balanced growth for five quarters in this period as well. Our exports have exceeded 250 billion dollars on an annual basis as of this month. We succeeded in attracting more than $240 billion of international direct investment to our country in the period 2003-2021. Last year alone, new, foreign direct investment worth $14 billion came to our country. All these are the most concrete signs of the strength of the Turkish economy and the trust in Turkey. The Turkish Economy Model has a great share in achieving these successes.”

President Erdoğan stated that they made a conscious choice by building their economic program on growing the country through investment, employment, production, exports and current account surplus, and that they have not made any concessions on these priorities for the last two years, including the epidemic period.

Stating that they continue to implement the economic program with determination, Erdoğan said, “Economy and trade constitute one of the main elements in Turkey-US relations. We have made great strides in the economic and commercial dimensions of our relations, especially in the last 10 years, with the support of the private sector.” said.

COVID-19 outbreak

Stating that the bilateral trade volume reached a record level of 28 billion dollars last year despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus, Erdoğan said that the USA is the second country to which Turkey exports the most and the fourth country to which it imports the most in 2021.

Erdogan said, “Our trade volume in the 8 months of this year increased by nearly 30 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached 22 billion dollars. If this momentum is maintained with the right and determined steps, our trade volume will reach the target of 100 billion dollars in a short time. We play a leading role in many fields in this regard. We rely on the support of you, esteemed entrepreneurs, who play the game.” said.

Expressing that the close interest shown by US-based companies to business opportunities in Turkey and the increase in their investments is a manifestation of the confidence in Turkey’s economy, Erdoğan said:

“Direct investments from the United States to Turkey have reached $14.1 billion. The investments of Turkish companies in the United States have reached the level of $8,6 billion. There are mutual trade and investment opportunities between Turkey and the United States in almost every sector. Turkey, It also plays a key role in diversifying routes and resources for energy security. Our potential for cooperation in the field of energy offers us important opportunities, considering the current international conjuncture. As a result of our investments in our natural gas infrastructure, including LNG terminals, America has become our second largest natural gas supplier. We also “We have become the sixth largest importer of American LNG in the world. We want to increase the gas we buy from America under more favorable terms in the coming period. Thanks to the advanced infrastructure we have, we are ready to cooperate in the delivery of American LNG to the countries in the region.”

“Turkey offers new investment opportunities in the field of renewable energy”

Stating that Turkey offers new investment opportunities in the field of renewable energy by positively distinguishing itself from Europe with its great leap forward recently, Erdoğan said that tourism is another sector with significant potential.

Erdogan said, “We hosted more than 500 thousand American tourists in our country in the first 7 months of this year. Turkish Airlines, which operates direct flights from Istanbul to 12 destinations in America, has a significant contribution to this. I believe that this number will increase in the coming period.” he said.

Expressing that there are still steps to be taken at the level of governments in order to fully realize the potential, Erdoğan said:

“Protective practices such as additional customs duties in the steel and aluminum industry, which the United States unilaterally implemented in 2018, continue to negatively affect our commercial relations. The removal of additional taxes in these sectors or the allocation of the quota granted to some other countries to Turkey will contribute significantly to our joint efforts. Artificial obstacles against our alliance law are placed in front of our cooperation in the field of defense industry. This situation negatively affects the security of the entire NATO geography as well as our commercial relations.

This wrong and biased attitude, which develops as a result of the pressure exerted by some lobbies on American decision-makers, which lacks a strategic perspective, actually harms American interests. For this reason, it is your cause as well as ours to remove these unilateral and unjustified obstacles as soon as possible. Turkey will continue to strive to develop its economic and commercial relations with the United States, as it has done so far. In this process, I trust the support of you, valuable business people and business councils, whom I see among Turkey’s closest friends. I would like to emphasize once again that the doors of our relevant institutions and organizations and representative offices in Turkey are always open to you.”
