Turkish Librarians Association listed the books that library readers read most in 2023. The most read book in the adult category was the novel Blindness by author José Saramago.

TKD announced the most read books in 2023 at an award ceremony, according to statistics received from 1,257 public libraries in 81 provinces.

Accordingly, the most read book in the adult category last year was author Jose Saramago’s novel Blindness. Blindness was followed by Matt Haig’s Midnight Library, Ahmet Ümit’s Land of the Lost Gods, Zülfü Livaneli’s My Brother’s Story and Ahmet Ümit’s Swallow Scream.

Blindness…

Jose Saramago’s book Blindness, from Portuguese literature, is about the spread of blindness throughout society as an infectious disease.

An anonymous person waiting at a red light during rush hour suddenly becomes blind while waiting for the light to turn green. It is worth noting that there are no names of places, avenues, streets, cities or people in the novel. This is the most important feature of the novel.

The unnamed character, whose world turns dark for a moment, is confused about what happened. He rushes out, ignoring the car horns blaring behind him. This is how the blindness begins, which will soon quickly affect the entire city.

People around who come to the aid of the driver who blocked the traffic lose their vision as soon as they touch this person. Thus, the whole city becomes blind, wave after wave.

Blindness as a metaphor

The author uses blindness as a metaphor here. The main idea he wants to give is to draw attention to people’s insensitivity and selfishness. It is a harsh criticism of the lumpen society that remains indifferent to the developing events.
