The only painting by Vincent van Gogh that he could sell while he was alive: The Red Vineyard in Arles

--

The Red Vineyard Near Arles is one of Vincent van Gogh’s most iconic works, completed in 1888 and believed to be the only painting he sold during his lifetime.

Vincent Van Gogh painted this painting while he was living in Arles, France. The painting depicts a vineyard scene with vibrant red vines under a golden sky. The style is characteristic of Van Gogh’s post-impressionist technique; It is rumored that Van Gogh adopted this technique with Gauguin, whom he actually met two years ago and who came to Arles to visit him.

Rumor has it that Van Gogh begged Gauguin to open an art exhibition with him and finally managed to persuade Gauguin, but after two months, Gauguin cut off Van Gogh’s ear with a razor after they fought frequently and an argument they had. are separated. In this process, while Van Gogh painted the painting “Red Vineyard in Arles”, Gauguin painted a portrait of Van Gogh called “The Painter of Sunflowers”. Van Gogh’s first impression of the painting was that Gauguin had drawn him as a madman, but after a while he said, “This was really me; “Extremely tired and sullen, just like I was back then.”

In Arles, the Red Vineyard was purchased for 400 francs in 1890 by Anna Boch, a Belgian art collector and friend of Van Gogh. Boch’s purchase of the painting provided Van Gogh with the financial support he needed at that time. Today, the Red Tie in Arles is exhibited at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, the capital of Russia, and continues to be one of the famous masterpieces of art history.
