A painting drawn by artificial intelligence has won an award in the fine art competition of the Colorado State Exhibition in the USA. Jason Allen, president of Colorado-based game company Incarnate Games, participated in the competition with an image he created in Midjourney, an artificial intelligence program that produces images based on given words.

The French “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” (Space Opera Theatre) depicts the scene that really looks like it was taken from a space opera, and it looks like a masterful painting.

In the image, human figures in a baroque-style hall are depicted in front of a bright landscape seen through a circular window.

Allen, who printed the picture on the canvas, announced that he won the first place in the digital art category of the competition and received a cash prize of $ 300 on his Discord account named Sincarnate.

Speaking to VICE, Allen added that he himself helped shape the picture. “I was researching a special topic that I would publish later. Using Midjourney I created 100s of images and after weeks of work I sorted the first three and printed them on canvas,” he said.

Emphasizing that the human factor was effective in the production of the work in question, Allen continued as follows:

“I create images with Midjourney, transitions with Photoshop, and go high quality using Gigapixel.”

An illustrator using the name “General Jumalon” also shared the news of Allen’s victory on his Twitter account. While the post received more than 82 thousand likes, the image also went viral.

The illustrator shared the news with the explanation, “Someone entered an art competition with an artificial intelligence creation and won the first prize”:

“Yeah, that’s such a sh*t situation.”

Another Twitter user named OmniMorpho also responded to the post and said, “We are watching the end of the artist live.”

The following statements were also included in the comment, which received approximately 5,000 likes:

“If creative jobs cannot be protected from machines, even high-status jobs are in danger of becoming obsolete. What then do we have?”

The beta version of Midjourney was recently released to the public via the Discord server.
